Reading:

In school we use reading VIPERS to support our comprehension skills. Each child will have 2 weekly, small group guided reading sessions as well as daily skills practise and a whole class guided reading session on a Friday. VIPERS helps children focus on how to answer different comprehension question styles.

S- Sequencing and summarising

 

Writing:

Wherever possible we link our writing opportunities to our topic work. This gives children the confidence of having specific knowledge in order to apply it to their writing. Each term we will cover a range of genres, and revisit these over the year, to ensure mastery of a particular text type.

 

Autumn Term:

Non-Chronological reports (linked to animals- Science)

Third person adventure stories (Iron Man- Class novel)

Third person diary entries (Iron Man- Class novel)

Newspaper reports (Iron Man- class novel)

Exploring form in poetry (Haiku, Cinquain, Kennings- seasonal topic- Halloween, Christmas)

Persuasive adverts (chocolate bars)

 

Spring Term:

Explanation texts (linked to digestion and water cycles)

Revisit- Exploring form (Haiku and Limmericks)

Stories from other cultures (linked to Vikings, Arthur and the Golden rope)
