Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum
Children within Nursery and Reception follow the Foundation Stage Curriculum. Fundamental to this curriculum are 3 prime areas:
-Personal, Social and Emotional Development
-Physical Development
-Communication and Language
These areas work together and help to form the basis for development in other areas of the curriculum. The four specific areas of learning also taught within the foundation stage are:
-Literacy
-Mathematics
-Understanding the World
-Expressive Arts and Design
Play
Much of the children’s learning at this stage is play based. It is recognised that children learn largely by exploring, that they need to be motivated to learn and be challenged to think and make decisions. These are known as the ‘characteristics of learning’ and they are also central to the foundation stage curriculum.
